On October 10th, 11th, and 12th 2008 at Denver's prestigious Rocky Mountain Audio Fest show, Audio Unlimited hosted the first active demonstration of the 3rd Generation Grande Utopia in the Maroon Peak ballroom. This premier showing of the Grande Utopia EM featured a Boulder 2000 Series system with the 2050 mono amplifiers, the Boulder 1021 Disc Player, TARA Labs Zero and Omega Gold cables, the new Aesthetix IO Eclipse phono preamp, the Clearaudio Statement turntable (also featured in an active public display for the first time ever in North America), and the premier of the flagship D'mitri AC conditioner from Running Springs Audio. The audio industry's most significant and influential hardware was displayed publicly in one mega-system for all to see and hear.
A word about our star performer, the new Grande Utopia EM ... Focal's newest Grande Utopia is a case of evolution turned into revolution. While keeping the familiar finish and driver materials of the Grande Utopia Be, this is where the similarities end. All of the drivers have been extensively reengineered with many engineering firsts including a woofer powered by a massive electromagnet system and a Beryllium tweeter with many times the magnetic field of the original unit and boasting a resonant frequency of 528Hz! The crossover network is a technical masterpiece featuring full adjustability and taking a shocking 16 hours to hand assemble. The most striking feature of all is the cabinet, this 573lb work of art is fully articulated allowing the entire driver array to be optimized for the room and seating position as no two setups will ever be the same. While the engineering behind this system is very complex, the application is simple. Just insert a hand crank (not any old crank mind you, this one is crafted from Chapal leather and billet aluminum) into the receptacle on the back of the tweeter module and rotate it as the array effortlessly glides to the desired position as displayed on the inlaid digital counter. All of this innovation comes together to form a loudspeaker capable of 14Hz bass extension yet has an efficiency of 94dB and sonics that will shape the industry for years to come.
